BMC Campus Redesign

1. Why is BMC redesigning on the Menino Campus and closing Newton Pavilion?

We are redesigning our campus to:

  • Better meet clinical needs and deliver the highest quality care
  • Make needed repairs to our facilities
  • Improve our financial stability; our current layout costs us millions a year

BMC's current split clinical campus (Menino and Newton) essentially means we are operating two full service hospitals right next door to each other and that we spend millions extra each year on things like utilities or ambulance transfers.

The split campus also means we often have workarounds in place to ensure we deliver the highest quality care to our patients.

The clinical campus redesign will consolidate clinical operations on the Menino side of the campus and close the Newton Pavilion building in 2017. It will allow us to make significantly needed repairs to our buildings and make major improvements to key facilities like our Emergency Department, Pediatrics, OB/GYN and our operating rooms.

2. When will the clinical campus redesign happen?

This is a phased approach culminating with the transition of services out of the Newton Pavilion building in 2017.

3. Will the clinical/department moves take place all at once?

A number of building changes have begun and over the next four years activity will be staggered.

4. What will this mean for patient care?

Patients have been and will continue to be at the forefront of all we do. Exceptional Care without Exception will continue to be our focus throughout this transition. The campus redesign will not only make for an improved daily work flow but will also allow us to offer an enhanced patient experience by:

  • Expanding our ED by approximately a third
  • Increasing the percentage of single rooms
  • Improving handicapped accessibility
  • Improved way finding

5. How will I be notified if my doctor's office has moved?

We will continue to provide Exceptional Care without Exception. If your provider is impacted by a move of his or her office. You will be notified well in advance through your appointment reminder. In addition, it is always beneficial to visit before your appointment for the most up to date office location information. You should be assured your care will be the same great care that you are already accustomed to.

6. What does this mean for BMC's future?

Tackling this challenge is fundamental to BMC's long-term ability to thrive as health care delivery models change and the pressure to control health care costs continues. The redesign will mean significant improvement in patient experience, quality, energy efficiency, and overall operational efficiency.

7. What will the new BMC campus look like?

The physical campus will adjust based on the following redesign activities:

  • An addition will be constructed on the Moakley building to expand the outpatient activities within the building.
  • An addition will be constructed within the Menino courtyard for the purposes of expanding the Emergency Department on the first floor, the surgery department on the second floor, and inpatient beds on floors 3 & 4.
  • A transport bridge will be constructed where the yellow utility tube is to connect the helipad to the Emergency Department.
  • A new cafeteria will be constructed on the mezzanine level of Yawkey, replacing the one in Menino Pavilion.

8. Why has the Emergency Room Walk In Entrance Relocated?

As of March 22, 2014 the Emergency Room walk-in entrance relocated to Harrison Avenue. This relocation will allow the hospital to begin the ER expansion. Please be assured, that this will not impact your care, you will continue to get the great care you are accustomed to receiving at Boston medical Center.

10. Why is the East Concord bus stop relocating?

To enable construction work on the Moakley addition, a key component of BMC's clinical campus redesign, the East Concord Street bus stop has relocated approximately 100 feet north (toward Harrison Avenue) as of Friday, April 4, 2014 at 5 a.m.

The following bus routes will drop off/pick up at the new location:

  • Academy Bus Lines
