Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Boston Medical Center is helping build awareness of the disease. As the risk for breast cancer has decreased from every 1 in 4 women to every 1 in 8 women, early detection is key. BMC follows the American Cancer Society’s guidelines which state that annual mammograms should begin at age 40 and continue for as long as the woman is in good health.

Clinical Breast Exams should be performed every three years for women in their early 20s to late 30s. These exams are a way for women to talk with their provider and discuss any changes they might have seen in their breasts, factors affecting their risk for breast cancer, and much more. For women 40 or older, clinical breast exams are to be performed annually along with the mammogram.

It is important that women get to know their breasts through self-exams. If they know the way they normally look and feel, they can spot an abnormality easily and contact their health care provider immediately.

According to the American Cancer Society, women at a high risk for breast cancer due to family history, genetic tendency, or other factors should receive a MRI along with their mammograms.

Throughout October, Boston Medical Center will be hosting events – both private and public – to help increase awareness in the community. On October 18th Boston Medical Center will host the 19th Annual Cancer Screening Event from 8am – 12pm. Located inside of the Moakley Building, medical staff will offer health screenings and educational materials for patients. Patients will be able to view presentations and engage in discussions on different health topics with BMC doctors. Women can receive walk-in mammograms and clinical breast exams while learning about the facts about women’s cancers. BMC encourages all of the community to come check it out and learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle!
