Program Description

BMC offers a challenging and rewarding PGY1 residency. The resident's year is structured into a tailored, comprehensive program that emphasizes development of advanced pharmaceutical care skills, while encouraging residents to explore interests in teaching and research. After a month-long orientation to the department, the resident begins a series of 5 week rotations and other longitudinal activities designed to meet the goals and objectives of the BMC pharmacy practice residency program.

Required Core Rotations (5)

  • Adult Internal Medicine
  • Hematology/Oncology or General Pediatrics
  • Critical Care (choose one from Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Cardiac ICU, or Emergency Medicine)
  • Ambulatory care clinics (Adult Primary Care, Adult Family Medicine, Anticoagulation Clinic, HIV Adherence Clinic, Renal/Transplant Clinic, Cardiomyopathy Clinic)
  • Practice Management

Elective Rotations (4)

  • Infectious diseases consult service
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Pediatric ICU
  • Outpatient Oncology Clinic
  • Informatics
  • Selection of a second rotation from the required rotations
  • Additional rotations may be available depending upon resident interest

Longitudinal Responsibilities

  • On-call program (rotates)
  • Resident Research/Quality Improvement Project
  • Medication use evaluation
  • New drug monograph
  • Drug Therapy News - Pharmacy Newsletter
  • Participation on residency committees

Teaching Opportunities

  • Resident case conference (weekly)
  • Inservices (to nursing, physicians, and pharmacy staff)
  • Two formal Continuing Education lectures
  • Co-precept pharmacy students while on rotation
  • Facilitate Therapeutics Seminars (Northeastern University)
  • Resident Teaching Seminar (state-wide teaching series, certificate is obtained upon completion, see AJPE 2004; 68(2) Article 38)

Hospital Practice (Staffing) Responsibilities

The objectives for hospital practice are met by staffing in both decentralized and central pharmacy positions. PGY1 residents rotate every 3rd weekend, plus 1 shift per week.


  • Estimated Stipend: $43,700
  • Insurance Benefits: Health, dental, vision, disability, accidental death and dismemberment, life insurance

  • Travel/CE allowance ($1800/year): Eastern States Resident's Conference, ASHP Midyear Meeting
