Boston Medical Center Appoints Thea James, MD, Vice President of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer; and Lisa Kelly-Croswell as Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

(Boston) July 22, 2015 – Boston Medical Center has appointed Thea James, MD, to the newly created role of Vice President of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer, and has promoted Lisa Kelly-Croswell to Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Both appointments are effective immediately.

In her new role, James, an emergency medicine physician, will work closely with caregivers throughout BMC and will have primary responsibility for managing BMC’s strategic relationships and partnerships with organizations including community agencies, housing advocates, community mental health providers, as well as substance abuse and violence prevention programs, to best serve BMC’s patient population.

As the region’s largest safety-net hospital, BMC has long recognized the importance of treating the whole patient and addressing the social determinants of health that impact patients, including food and housing insecurity and exposure to violence in their communities. This new role further supports BMC’s mission as the hospital takes on a larger role in improving the overall health of its patient population.

In addition to these new responsibilities, James will continue in her role as director of the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program (VIAP), which she co-founded in 2006. VIAP is a co-founder of the National Network of Hospital Based Violence Intervention Programs (NNHVIP) which has grown to more than 28 programs nationwide and internationally.

“Dr. James has an innate ability to truly connect with our patients, to meet them where they are and normalize events that are often devastating,” said Ravin Davidoff, MD, chief medical officer and senior vice president of medical affairs. “Her compassion is immeasurable, and it is that passion and dedication that made her the ideal candidate to serve as BMC’s vice president of mission, helping us to continue to serve our patients in ways far beyond traditional medical care.”

James joined BMC in 1995. She is an associate professor of emergency medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, and has held several leadership roles at BMC, including serving as president of the BMC medical and dental staff.

In addition to her work at BMC, James co-founded Unified for Global Healing, a foundation aimed at improving health outcomes across the globe. As a supervising medical officer on the Massachusetts Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT-MA1) she has provided emergency medical care to victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, and earthquake victims in Iran and Haiti.

A resident of Cambridge, James earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hampton University in Virginia, her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed her residency in emergency medicine at Boston City Hospital, now Boston Medical Center. She is a 2014 recipient of the Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award, and the Pinnacle Award from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.


Lisa Kelly-Croswell 

In her new role as Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Lisa Kelly-Croswell will oversee human resources, occupational and environmental health, and volunteer services at BMC. She will play a key coordinating role across the BMC health system, which includes the Boston HealthNet community health center network and the BMC HealthNet Plan, to further integrate and strengthen connections in order to continue to provide patients with seamless, high-quality care.

Kelly-Croswell has been focused on progressing organizational and leadership development practices, and rebuilding HR services and systems as foundations to advancing BMC’s strategic plan.

“Lisa has been instrumental in developing new ways to ensure that our people have the tools, support and working environment needed to advance our mission and achieve our goals.,” said Kate Walsh, president and chief executive officer of BMC. “She will play a key role in further integrating the organizational strengths, cultures and talents of our staff across our healthcare system to enhance the best possible patient care and service to our community.”

Kelly-Croswell brings 25 years of experience in HR leadership roles. Prior to joining BMC in 2013, Kelly-Croswell served as senior vice president of human resources and corporate services at Vertex Pharmaceuticals and has also served as senior vice president, human resources of the healthcare division at CIGNA. She has spent a large portion of her career in other world-class human resource organizations, including roles at Monsanto Company and Frito-Lay, Inc., a division of PepsiCo.

Kelly-Croswell, of Lexington, graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s degree in labor and industrial relations. She is a recipient of the Hartford Business Journal's “Top 40 Under 40” Award.
