Grilling Safety Tips
Spring is here and the sun is out, which means it's time to start firing up the grill. Cookouts are a great way to spend time with friends and family outside while enjoying the nice weather.
Before you fire up the grill, keep in mind these safety tips:
- Put the grill far enough away from the house, deck railings, and any tree branches that could easily catch fire
- Clean the grill, removing grease and fat build up before starting to cook
- Don’t wear loose fitting clothing near an open flame
- Stand by the grill at all times while cooking and use long-handled utensils to avoid burns and splatters
- Always keep an eye on the kids and don't let them near the grill area
- If you use a gas grill, never store the cylinders in closed spaces. Always store your tanks in outdoor, ventilated areas
- You can use lighter fluid, but you should never use gasoline or kerosene as they are too flammable and dangerous to use around fires. And never pour lighter fluid onto a lit fire.
- If you are using a charcoal grill, remember to let the coals completely cool before placing them in a metal container. The coals you use will remain hot for 12-24 hours. Practice caution, especially with young children, long after you've finished grilling to avoid burns.
